The Ray Price Race Team Shows Up Strong

Brings Home Two Number One’s from Bristol Dragway

  • 1 August 2012

The Ray Price Race Team is excited to announce the successful weekend at the AHDRA Thunder in the Valley Nationals in Bristol, TN August 3 and 4. Not only did the team pull off the win but they clinched the number one qualifying position too!

The 1,000 horsepower Top Fuel Nitro Harley drag bike (Akea Express), piloted by Tommy Grimes, delivered a solid performance despite the fact that Tommy was fighting an injury to his left hand and he was uncertain if he would be able to race. Between this and the weather challenges, the weekend looked bleak but the team was optimistic and finished strong. With only two qualifying rounds to set the stage for the eight Top Fuel Harley field, Grimes’ landed the number one spot, running a 6.420 ET at 227.61 mph.

Saturday afternoon eliminations started and in round one, the Akea Express takes the win, running a 6.553 ET at 230.17 mph which proved to be the fastest mph pass of the weekend for all Top Fuel Harley’s.

Moving into the semi-finals, Grimes fights a mechanical issue but is able to pull off the win against Devine Pelrine who fought an even bigger issue. The bike had to be repaired in between rounds which led to a full engine replacement in order to be ready for the finals.

“The team never ceases to amaze me”, said Ray Price, “they were able to change the motor in 41 minutes and were ready for the finals.”

After a very long day and another track delay, finals began around 9 p.m. The Akea Express is paired with Douglas Horne. Grimes knew Horne was hungry for the win after the Bristol loss in June but he was ready for the fight. Stepping up and delivering a 0.051 light Grimes runs 6.592 ET at 212.56 mph to win after his opponent’s red light.

“Bristol Dragway is a great track and has been good to us the past couple of years”, said Ray Price. “We fought some weather but it proved to be a great weekend and as always I’m proud of the team for pulling together to take home another win.”

The Akea / Ray Price Racing team will head to Mission BC to compete in a CMDRA event August 18 and 19 before heading to the North-West Nitro Nationals held at the Woodburn Dragstrip, Woodburn, Oregon August 25 and 26, 2012.
