Virginia Motorsports Park in Petersburg, Virginia hosted a weekend of National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) races April 12-13, ranging from door cars and Top Alcohol dragsters to funny cars and funny bikes. Ray Price Akea Drag Racing Team rider Tommy Grimes qualified in the number one spot on Friday, then finished second on Saturday, two hundredths of a second behind first place winner Douglas Horne.
Morning rain delayed the Friday races, but the Motorsports Park crew worked hard to dry the track as quickly as possible. The quick changes in temperature and humidity presented challenges to the race teams, needing to calibrate everything in accordance to those readings. The Ray Price team was able to master it. Grimes made his first pass of the day at 214.72 MPH, completing the quarter mile track in 6.353 seconds, placing him in the number one qualifier spot. The second run took place after dark, again requiring a different range of adjustments for Grimes to perform at his best. He finished on top with an ET of 6.266 seconds at 221.27 MPH.
On Saturday, Grimes’ first pass secured his number one spot for finals, running 6.282 seconds at 220.3 MPH. Grimes went up against Horne at the end of the day and ran 6.268 seconds at 222.77 MPH. Horne won with a slightly quicker reaction time, running 6.276 at 215.03 MPH.
Grimes and the Ray Price team head to Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio for their next NHRA race May 17-19.
